Stuttering Devices

Stuttering Devices and More

Lately, there is a question which is dominating the question market. In summary, the questions i've been receiving lately are along the lines of; "do you think stuttering is genetic? Is it really a neurological flaw? What's your take on that, Chazzler?" The answer is very simple! In fact, it couldn't be simpler. Here is my take on that...

It doesn't matter! No, I am serious. Whether stuttering is genetic or not has nothing to do with where you are going with your speech. Stuttering makes us feel bad because it is an emotional burden on our shoulders. We see stuttering as an obstacle on our way to live a successful, confident and fulfilled life. Stuttering is not just a speech block, it is a block in our choices, in our decisions, in our desires, in our beliefs, in our personality, in our potential... In simplest terms, we give stuttering the right to highjack and control our whole life.

When I say "overcome stuttering" I don't mean no disfluencies what so ever in speech. To me someone who overcame stuttering is someone whom his/her stuttering mindset is dissolved and in no way out on his/her way to a succesfull, confident, fulfilled life... And once you are at that stage, fluency will come as a byproduct!..May be not perfect(!) fluency but very satisfying; way beyond your expectations. Remember that fluency is not the objective, it is a consequence!

Ok, back to genetics and neurological flaw. Do you think it is right to think and believe that stuttering is genetic and there is nothing to do about it? Which the later is completely untrue by the way! Think about it, would you care about your stuttering as much if your physical blocks wouldn't hurt you emotionally/mentally at all? It is not the physical blocks which give us the pain, it is the meanings we attach to them, it is how they make us feel inside!

You shouldn't even talk about whether stuttering is genetic or not unless you are a person who works as a scientist in the research and development area in the field of stuttering. If they will find a cure, great! But there is a possibility that it may not happen in the near future. I think it is fine to have not perfectly fluent speech as long as one can honestly admit it but still works on to become a better person/communicator.

Anybody who uses "stuttering is genetic" as an excuse to not to work on themselves does a huge mistake. That simply means they are ruining their future. The goal is not reaching perfect fluency, the goal is to become a better communicator, a better person, a more complete person...And if our speech is one of our skills which we need to improve on to achieve better things in life then we need to work on it and improve it... Just like we would work on any other areas of our life which we have room to improve. Speech and communication skills is no different than any of our other crucial skills.

So, even though you believe stuttering is genetic, considering the fact that you can greatly improve your speech and communication skills, I strongly believe that you still need to work on your speech and other areas of your personality and life.

If your speech is on your way blocking your beliefs, success, confidence, potential and fulfillment in life in any way, then you need to work on it no matter this problem is genetic or not... Because there is one point which has been proven by hundreds and that is the fact that our speech and communication skills can be improved..Even if this problem is genetic, you can improve your speech to a very high level... Both in terms of fluency and in terms of effective communication.

If you are a person losing hope and will power to improve your speech which can go beyond your imagination because of those debates on genetics and stuttering, I have something to tell you: do not let those people suck all your motivation and energy. As long as you believe in yourself, you will get results. People beat impossible illnesses with psychology, people do amazing things just by mind power.

Nothing tells me to believe in anything which will stop me to reach my goals and dreams in life! That by itself is a good enough reason which makes me not to even think about whether stuttering is genetic or not. Because no matter what the studies in this area say, I have and will achieve my speech related goals and desired outcomes in life. And I urge you to do the same, unless you want to find yourself talking about "why" something will not work instead of experiencing how it feels when you achieved that desired outcome.
