A speech impediment can have a huge affect on a persons life. It can leave them feeling depressed, unconfident, sad, lonely and with a low self-esteem. I know this for a fact as I had a stutter for eighteen years, and over the last ten years I have met and helped many other people who stutter/stammer. In this article, I am going to write about some of the lastest treatments that are available to people who have this annoying speech impediment.
During the period when I had a stutter, I was often frustrated with the lack of help available. I have to admit that I had a very negative attitude to the traditional speech therapists. I would think to myself, you have never suffered with this problem, therefore how do you know what I am going through. You advise me to speak slower, come on people I need a lot more than this.
What many of these so called stuttering experts or stuttering specialists fail to realise, is that stuttering is not just a physical problem. In my opinion, it is far more a type of in grained mental problem. For example, when I was feeling really low or depressed, I would then believe that I would not be able to speak fluently. In a way, I was always be able to tell when I was about to stutter, sometimes even ten words before the actual word was to be spoken.
Treatments for stuttering have now improved some what. People are now able to attend classes run by people who have suffered and overcome a stutter. There are other forms of stuttering therapy available such as self help stuttering ebooks and dvds.
