Yesterday was some what of a “football” day in our family. In the morning we watched my son’s football team play a cup game against a team who play in two divisions above. This is under ten’s football which I have to say is very competitive. My son is a defender and is a proud captain of the team. Every single player in the team gave it their all and at one stage one of their parents shouted out “Keep battling boys – you can do it.”
This reminded me of something my father said to me when I was attempting to eradicate the stutter from my life. I was not just the age of nine – I was actually a fully grown adult at the age of twenty-two but I too was in need of a lot of support and encouragement. There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel and just accept, like the speech therapists wanted me to, that I would have the stutter for the rest of my life. My parents would not allow me to think in these most negative ways and kept pushing me to continue the fight – a fight which led to a successful conclusion.
My son’s football team were also successful managing to win on penalties after extra time. This was some what of a giant killing and we were very proud of every single one of them.
Then in the afternoon we all went to watch our favourite football team Birmingham City play Liverpool. In truth this was quite a similar scenario to the morning match as Liverpool are the team with the history, they are the team packed with international players etc. Birmingham City are however a “team” and were fighting for every ball. Liverpool were just show boating and were quite frankly dreadful. I would much rather watch a team like Birmingham play every week than watch Liverpool, we play with passion, with pride and with dedication. In the end the match finished in a draw which was not exactly a true reflection of the game.
The thought of the day: keep battling and never give up.
